We Are the First AI-Parent Generation
For parents, here’s the uncomfortable truth: we are the first generation raising kids in an AI-saturated world without a guidebook. The iPhone came with some warning labels. Social media came with too few.
AI? None.
It’s as if Silicon Valley handed us a box labeled “Pandora” and said: Good luck.
As the dad behind an AI startup, and the parent of a 14-year-old daughter and an 18-year-old son, I feel that Pandora’s box in my palms. I write workflows. I monitor the algorithms. Yet when my daughter whispers, “Dad, can ChatGPT help me with my English essay?” I freeze. Because the lines are blurry. And the stakes are high.
Grade School: Enchantment, but With Hidden Terms
At age 14, my daughter already jokes about robots doing her chores. At that age, I asked her to fess up: Yes, I’ve used AI to “help me think.” In middle and high school, that kind of help is ubiquitous. One study of secondary students found nearly 70% had used large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT for assignments across subjects. arXiv
Meanwhile, the data side is uglier than fairy dust. In one Internet Safety Labs report, 96% of ed tech apps used by K–12 share students’ personal information with third parties, many collecting location data, calendar metadata, contact lists, and more. So while the app reads Shakespeare aloud or turns math drills into a game, behind the scenes your child’s clicks, mistakes, subject areas, and usage times are being logged and potentially monetized. Under COPPA (the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act), only kids under 13 get some legal guardrails, above that, most protections vanish. Federal Trade Commission
High School: Shortcut or Skill?
My son (just turned 18) argues that using AI is just being resourceful. He’s not wrong. But where is the line between resourcefulness and dependence?
Usage is skyrocketing. In one recent survey, 86% of students globally said they regularly use AI in their studies; more than half use it at least weekly. Digital Education Council Another survey indicates that in 2025, 92% of undergraduates are using AI tools in assessments, up from 66% a year earlier. HEPI
On the “cheating” front: Turnitin analyzed usage and reported that in 11% of assignments run through its AI detection systems, at least 20% of the content showed evidence of AI involvement. And in 3% of those, as much as 80% or more was generated by AI. Education Week
So yes, the genie is indeed out. Students are using AI to brainstorm, to polish, to even generate full drafts. But widespread reliance on those tools risks atrophy of original thinking. If your child always has a “smart friend in the cloud,” when will they ever need to struggle?
College Admissions: Bots Reviewing Bots
Admissions is turning into algorithmic theater. Reflect on this: 37% of admissions officers already use AI in evaluating applications, according to a Kaplan poll. Yet students are flooding the system with essays polished or partially written by AI.
One admissions officer reportedly told me: “We’re evaluating human authenticity through machine-written proxies.”
The irony is bitter.
As AI becomes the norm, applicants from households that can afford coaching, prompting, or better tools will outpace those who can’t, widening inequality under the guise of innovation.
My own 18-year-old had to address this. If he leverages AI, which essay would admissions know was in his voice and which is the model’s? Once the essay is polished by AI, how do you confirm the person behind the screen is the same one doing the thinking? It’s tough using AI in this instance relative to the risk.
Privacy: The Market in Our Kids’ Minds
Even as AI becomes pedagogical, it is surveillance. Every query, every hesitation, every half-finished prompt: they are data. And much of that data belongs not to your child, but to the companies running the tools.
Educational apps aren’t immune. A cross-sectional study of top children’s apps found heavy third-party data sharing and identifiers being transmitted, often without clear disclosure. PMC The consequences: your child’s writing style, topic choices, and even learning gaps feed datasets that improve future AIs, in effect, your kid is training their future competition.
We’ve made peace with handing over our social graph and our money habits, but handing over cognitive impressions, mistakes, internal dialogues? That’s new, and deeply personal.
What Parents Can Do Today
You don’t need to solve it all now. But here’s what you can do, especially with a 14- and 18-year-old in your house:
1. Start regular, judgment-free talks about AI.
Ask how they used it today. Ask where it helped. Ask where it failed. Don’t frame AI as a forbidden fruit, frame it as another tool under their control.
2. Co-create rules.
Don’t ban wholesale. Instead, co-design boundaries. For example: use AI for idea generation or first drafts, but final revisions must come from their brain. Or set “AI blackout zones”, e.g. during timed exams.
3. Teach skepticism and unpack outputs.
When they show you generated content, ask: Where might this be wrong? What assumptions is the model making? Help them see hallucinations, bias, and context gaps. That way, the AI becomes a sparring partner, not a crutch.
Closing the Loop
This moment is messy. We don’t fully understand the rules yet. But we do carry something powerful: parental agency. The conversations we have, the boundaries we set, the critical thinking we model, these are the guardrails our kids desperately need.
